Logger Charles Gleason dies

      Orofino - Charles H. Gleason, a retired logger and longtime Orofino resident, died Sunday at Clearwater Valley Hospital at Orofino. He was 89.
      Gleason was born Feb. 18, 1890 at Ashley, Utah to William and Louisa Gleason and moved to Washington as a young boy. The family lived at several Washington locations, including Clarkston, before settling at Orofino in 1904.
      As a young man, he worked for the now defunct White Pine Lumber Co. of Orofino and in the mid 1920s worked as a gyppo logger. He later worked for the Clearwater Timber Protective Association, Johnson's Mill at Orofino and at the Ahsahka Lumber and Milling Co. He had retired in 1962.
      He married the former Stilla Harlan June 18, 1931 at Asotin.
      He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, Gem State Barracks. He also was a member of the Orofino Lodge, A.F. and A.M. No. 69, and the Scottish Rite.
      Surviving are his wife, of the family home at Orofino; three daughters, Harla Matson and Carolyn Mattson of Orofino and Elaine Rinehart of Denver, Colo. as sister, Violet Wilhite of Washougal, Wash. and 11 grandchildren.
      A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Gilberts Funeral Chapel, Orofino, the Masonic Lodge of Orofino officiating. Burial will follow at Weseman Cemetery.
      Memorials may be given to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children at Spokane or to the Lewiston chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
